For the record, in case my beloved corporate clients and friends read this post, corporate is not a bad word. There are many pluses to a corporate structure and organization.
I once worked with a company that did not fit the corporate mould, in fact, would balk at the first scent of C (please get through the malicious site filters - this is not pornographic). But after a period of fabulous, exciting and dramatic growth, they came to the realization that the best aspects of a corporate structure and organization were needed to allow them to continue to succeed and evolve. When it came time to begin to roll out the new structure and related policies to staff, one of the biggest concerns was avoiding anything that sounded C.
Working on your own, you have the advantage of being as un-corporate or as corporate as you wish, whenever you wish. Work in your PJs? Obscene coffee mug? Like to tap dance to get your creative groove on? No problem. But those structural things like, having a business plan, tracking projects, and strong organizational systems will save you, and put you in a better place than those who don’t have them.
